The French Connection is a 1971 crime thriller film directed by William Friedkin and produced by Philip D’Antoni. The film stars Gene Hackman as New York Police Department detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle, Roy Scheider as Buddy “Cloudy” Russo, Fernando Rey as the French police captain Pierre Nicoli, and Tony Lo Bianco as the Italian mobster Alain Charnier.

The movie follows two NYPD detectives across the city and across the world in pursuit of a dangerous heroin smuggler. The film was based on Robin Moore’s 1969 non-fiction book about an actual police investigation that took place in New York City from 1967 to 1968.
